Event Title Numerical Relays in Power System Protection
Programme Overview
and Objective
Power system protection is presently undergoing a transition to microcomputer technology. The introduction of digital technology in the protection field has made tremendous changes in the art and science of power system protection. The new relays are multifunctional and operate fully digitally (numerically). Apart from the basic protection function, these relays have extensive self-monitoring capabilities and can communicate with operator terminals and control systems. This programme is aimed to provide an overview of the latest technologies used in the numerical based power system protection, their underlying theory and the areas of application.

Upon completion of this programme the participants will have,

  • Better understanding about the evolution of power system protection.
  • Good knowledge of the basics of numerical relays.
  • Good knowledge about the scaling and filtering of signal.
  • Overall idea about various relay algorithms.
  • Better understanding about protection methodologies used for generators, transformers and lines using numerical relays.

Profile
  • Overview of power system protection
  • Introduction to numerical relays
  • Signal conditioning and processing
  • Relay algorithms
  • Numerical techniques for generator, transformer and line protections

Methodology The programme will be covered through class room lecture sessions, discussions and case studies.
